If you post some of the information that you have, volunteers may look at it and see if they can help you out - names, dates, places etc - whatever you have.

Manitoba has an excellent site for their vital stats, that is easy to search on:

http://vitalstats.gov.mb.ca//Query.php

The site you posted does not help in my search as they are only for:-
Births - more than 100 years ago
Marriages - more than 80 years ago
Deaths - more than 70 years ago
But I thank you for trying to help. Smile

This is why I joined this site hoping to have more success in my research as promised but so far I have been disappointed. Crying or Very sad

One of the surnames I'm researching is: Warnier

If the Manitoba Vitals website does not work out and the census are not sufficient, then may we ask who exactly are you seeking out (names, dates of birth/death). Remember, this site (Census) will only give a flash of life for its participants. You may uncover dates of birth but it will not help with dates of death as census only cover the living.

Are these people living? If so, you have a road block in the sense of privacy laws.

I am finding this site confusing. Sad There is no place where I can click on to reply to a message adddressed to me from J Gaudet. What subject do I use? Topic? Confused

Mr or is it Ms Gaudet. You ask me to give you names and dates but I am hesitant because I feel that is private information and as we all know anything posted on the Internet is available to anyone who searches. Is there a way I can send the information to you privately? Also, what is meant by your expression "flash of life"?

Please reply asap. Thank you. Merci. Smile

I'm not sure exactly what you were hoping to discover but when looking for relatives on this site, it is important to remember that our "knowledge" is based solely on a census conducted 98 years ago (ie: "a flash in a moment of their life"). If your ancestors were born after the 1911 census, then unfortunately you must wait until the 1921 census has been released (likely 4-5 more years). Genealogical roadblocks are the primary reason for searching in the first place. If the privacy laws are still in effect for the people you are searching, then this site will not be helpful for you.

I guess I just don't understand what this site is all about. I'm not looking for census information. I'm looking for BMD information on my ancestors in Manitoba, Canada. So obviously I'm not on the correct site. Sad

Yes, I don't think this is the right site for you.

You might want to look at the Library & Archives Canada - Canadian Genealogy Centre - How to begin
http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/genealogy/index-e.html. (there are two Warniers from Belgium in their searchable immigration records)

or join the Rootsweb mailing list for Manitoba
http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/intl/CAN/CAN-MANITOBA.html

or become a member of the Manitoba Genealogical Society
http://www.mbgenealogy.com/index.php?page=faq-s-getting-started-outreach

Once you get back to ancestors born more than 100 years ago, then this might be the right site for you.

Robin M
Thanks for taking the time to post those sites for me. I have used the Library and Archives site before without much success.

My ancestors arrived in Canada from Belgium in 1919. I have all my family information up until the time they arrived here. It is what happened afterwards such as marriages, births, etc., that is missing. However, I do have my grandparents's death dates. So it is what happened in between arriving here and their deaths that I am interested in acquiring.

I will certainly get in touch with the mailing list and the Manitoba Society I am sure I will find what I need there.

Thank you all for your responses. Very Happy

Alice in Ontario.

You can obtain information from the Manitoba Vital Statistics office provided that you are a close enough relative and you have names and approximate dates. The index available on the Internet does not represent everything that is available -- it is just the information that is old enough not to violate privacy laws (and therefore made available on the Internet). If you go to the Manitoba Vital Statistics office website you can find out how to go about ordering BMD certificates that are less than 100 (or whatever) years old. I have to say that privacy mania has turned this into a bit of a pain, but it can be done. The issue here would be whether you had exact enough dates -- the form is not very clear as to how precise you must be. http://vitalstats.gov.mb.ca/pdf/Application_for_Genealogical_Search.pdf

Another source that you could look at is the Online Winnipeg Free Press Archives. If your ancestors lived in the Winnipeg area (or even in most parts of rural Manitoba) and had a relatively distinctive surname, you might be able to find BMD announcements in the newspaper, or other items mentioning them. The newspaper archive is fully searchable. Go to winnipegfreepress.com and look for "Archive" -- access for 7 days is only $9.95 and well worth it.

Another excellent source is the Winnipeg civic cemeteries index, which can be found on the City of Winnipeg's website. If any ancestors were buried at any of the city-owned cemeteries you will find them here. That is probably somewhat less likely if they were from Belgium and Catholic, since they would then have been more likely to have been buried in a Catholic cemetery. Other online cemetery indexes may be available.

Thank you Andrew
A very kind and generous lady has contacted me privately and has found and sent me dozens of newspaper articles regarding my family. Surprised I am so very grateful for her thoughtfulness and would like to thank her publically but she has not given me permission to do so but she knows who she is. Very Happy Thanks to everyone who has taken the time to respond to my query. Smile Ali

Hi Alice ,

I live in Winnipeg and volunteer to photograph cemeteries and other volunteers index them. I didn't see that surname in the Belgian cemetery but, in case, there's other names you're looking for, it can be found here:

http://cemetery.canadagenweb.org/MB/MBS1663/

Most Belgians ended up in the St.Boniface [french-speaking] area.

St.Boniface has a Heritage website, The Société historique de Saint-Boniface:

http://www.shsb.mb.ca/englishindex.htm

I've ordered records from Vital Statistics that are not online so it is possible to do but might be a bit harder for you, being from out-of-province.

Hope this helps!

Albert
I looked at the cemetery site you suggested and found my grandfather's name in the index of the above cemetery then saw the photograph of his headstone.

Unfortunately, the index and the headstone have only his surname inscribed and nothing else. I would like to provide his forename, dates of birth and death to the index but there is no place where to provide the information.

Can you help.

Alice

PS: FYI. the St. Boniface Heritage site you recommended is no longer active.

Hi Alice,

Are you sure it's his ? I did that cemetery also and i can send you that photo if you want. I can also go take more photos of all sides , if you'd like, It's about a 10 minute drive from my place. I can pass on that information also to the website Co-Ordinator [I'd rather not post her email on the board].
You can contact me at albert.riezebos @ gmail.com [no spaces]

Albert

[Also, the index is built from what's on the headstone, and i check each side when i take the photo so that's probably all that's on there. No problem to go make sure, though.]
