I have been in the process of creating links from the census to the Halifax Explosion Remembrance Book . I link them when there is enough information to be sure that they are the same people. Sometimes the info supporting the link might not jump right out at a person viewing the link other times I go with a "gut feeling". I have thought of posting questionable ones, but have not until now. So next time when I come across ones that I believe are the same people but it is a "gut feeling" I will post here asking others to agree or disagree with me. I would be very happy with the help, also if someone comes across ones that I have already created a link too, and they question my belief that they are the same people please post here and I could review and give my reasons why I believed that the people were the same. Most links are, of course, in Nova Scotia but there are some in other provinces as well. I have been going through the "book" page by page so far I'm up to page 58. So if anyone has sometime to spare and they go over the pages that I have already done and find a person that I have not link-- up to page 58, and they believe that there should be a link please let me know with some reasons why you believe they should be linked. Please don't hesitated to ask me a question, also here is the website I'm writting about
http://www.gov.ns.ca/nsarm/virtual/remembrance/
Thank You for your time

I'd say your gut feeling in this case is probably right on the money. Here's a link to a family genealogy page on Adele Bourque, mother of Adele Samson, the 2nd wife of John Kennedy which provides quite a bit of info, including the fact that their daughter Hilda Maude died in the Halifax explosion of 1917.

Nice work Sean!

Thank You, that was enough for me to link them. So the children that are listed on the census are from the first marriage. _________________ Wear RED Fridays!! Support OUR Troops!

I have created a page that lists the links made so far:
http://automatedgenealogy.com/uidlinks/HalifaxList.jsp
There is a link to this page on the site home page under other projects.
If you follow the link on the page to the NS Archives site there is quite a lot of interesting information on the explosion and links to other online resources including a CBC site on the explosion. |

Hi RMartin
I have created the link from the census to the Memorial page. The other link I can not do, Linsday will have to do that one. I believe that Lindsay is going to try and make it possible to link from the census to informative postings such as yours, so check back often.

I have finished linking from the census to the Halifax victims. Most of the victims had enough info on the Halifax web site to back up the link, others I went with a "feeling". There are still many victims that I could not creat a link to, most because they were under the age 0f 16, others because they were from other countries, and still other that just did not have enough information or the surnames had to many hits to be sure of which one was the victim. I found many of the fathers of families lost in the Explosion before they were married and had children, it is to bad that a link could not be made to their families but it would not make since to someone looking up the name- I guess that will have to wait for the release of the 1911 census LOL. If anyone has a chance to go through it and find things that are questionable please let me know, also if someone finds a name I have not included, again, please let me know.

My next project, I hope, will be to link the soldiers lost in WW1 and the South African War of 1899 to 1902. I hope that I many be able to find another volunteer to help me with this one!!

Kudos Sean, for a job WELL DONE! I have also been doing some "adding" to the Nova Scotia names - I have access to the Marriage Registers and have been adding some notes re year of marriage, register page and entry # - hopefully it too can assist someone.

Hi Sandy,
Out of curiosity, what form are your marriages in? If they are online or can be put online we could set up linking. If they are in a copyrighted index, oh well. |

I can't honestly tell you if they are copyright or not - it never entered my mind! I must check into that - thank you for mentioning it! (Although, since the information is readily availabe at the Archives, it probably isn't copyrighted info).
A group of us had been indexing the Halifax Marriages (from a previously typed index that was several years (or decades?) old, that are held at the Public Archives, in Halifax). They span the years 1865-1916, and we typed them on Excel.
We have completed the indexing and are now just entering the "checking against the microfilm" stage - there are a lot of errors (from the originals) and a lot of gaps. I would think that we are about 6 months away from releasing the information to the general public - again, all through volunteers - so we can only push ourselves, not others!
What I had done was print out several pages of the 1899 & 1900 marriages and looked them up on the 1901 census. If I felt there was a positive match, I made a line note ( see as an example: Halifax, Ward 3, subdistrict c-1, Finn, William D & Alice M. ....)
So, to fully answer your question , they are not presently available for linking, but would probably make a great candidate in the near future!
In between proofreading stints, I will continue to add!
Cheers,
Sandi |

Are you planning to add more names to the Halifax explosions list?
I have recently met a cousin's wife who told me that her great-grandfather died in the explosion.
I think I have found the people in question - George Richardson (Jr) and George Richardson (Sr) but I didn't see them on your list.
I have found them on the 1901 census in Halifax 33, Ward 5, page 11.
What else needs to be done? |

I have linked them to the Halifax Explosion Remembrance Book. If you go back to the census page where you found them you will see "Link" at the end of their line number. They are not on the Halifax Explosion list yet...not sure why.
Lindsay is there a reason that these two links are not showing up on the list?? Is it because I have not done any links with this project for some months??

Lindsay has come up with a great way to help out the people doing the linking. I will let Lindsay say it in his own words;
| lpatten wrote: | Since linking requests often involve a reference to someone in the 1901 Census you might find the following trick useful. When you want to refer to someone in the 1901 Census look for a small page icon in the upper right of the age column, right click on that and select "Copy shortcut" or "Copy link location" depending on your browser. You can then paste that link into your post here and the person doing the linking will get taken directly to the page with the person highlighted.
Here's a sample link produced this way:
http://automatedgenealogy.com/census/DisplayPagePanb.jsp?id=796&highlight=1 |
So if you would like someone linked please use the suggestion above.
Thank You
