p 11d, 12a line 11 The name is written as Kent, Duollia. It should be Kent, Dewillis. He is listed correctly as Dewillis in the 1901 and 1911 records. It's my g-g-grandfather, information came from my grandmother. |

Ref.: 1852 / Canada West / Hastings (county) / 128 Sidney township / p. 11d, 12a, (22) Vicki, Line 11 - I made no corrections to the given name because I also read that the enumerator wrote "Duollia". Therefore, I linked the 1852 record to the 1901-1911. The policy of this site is to transcribe the name as written by the enumerator. Cheers, |

Oh, ok. Doesn't that make it difficult for people who are using the transcriptions for geneology research? Hard to search a name if it's the wrong name. |

Vicki Thank you for your interest in our index. Because we are transcribing data from an official document, it is necessary to record what is in that document, not what we think should be in the document. There are sometimes many different opinions on what the various names should be, but we are concerned with what the enumerator wrote in the census document. I understand your concern about finding a person in the census if his or her name was not enumerated as it is commonly known. We have tried to address this problem with surname notes, line notes and links to other documents or censuses so that the researcher can see how the name was recorded in different documents. Genealogy researchers are often faced with different spellings of family surnames and given names. We have done what we can to help them find their ancestors in our census indexes. Thank you again for your interest and for giving us the information that allowed Alain to link Dewillis Kent to his incorrect entry in the 1852 census. |
