Hi all I am trying to research the census of 1842 Bathurst Ontario(Upper Canada). The on line digital census provided by Library and Archives Canada is very difficult to use in depth. I have used this sight often and found it great and have been thankful for all your hard work. Some day I think you will get to the 1842 census but as yet you have not. When you do your research I think you must use hard copies made to compile the information you create. Is there a way I could find or print a hard copy of the 1842 census for my research? If you can help me out on this I would be greatly appreciate your assistance or advice. Cheers |

Hello Gallowglass, Through LAC, you can view the 5 subdistricts of the Bathurst area: https://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/census/18 ... ricts.aspx Then by giving a subdistrict in the keyword field, you can access each PDF page and dump or copy, as needed: https://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/census/18 ... ?k=fitzroy As a start, this might help, since LAC doesn't offer that many options to help the searcher. Hi Gallowglass - Automated Genealogy (AG) uses the digital images uploaded by Library & Archives Canada (LAC) and doesn't have access to other "better" images. The AG project first launched around 2003 when LAC first uploaded census images, starting with 1901. At that point online indices were rare. The FamilySearch index to 1881 was an exception but that didn't provide a link to the original image. After transcribing 1901, the momentum of the hundreds of AG volunteers continued on with the release and transcription of the 1911, 1906 and 1851/2 censuses. But after that the for-profit services got the jump on us with privileged access to the LAC images and so we have focused on proofreading and adjudicating the censuses already done (or almost completed in the case of 1851/2) and we are unlikely to embark on more. Another factor was that 1842 is head of households only so lends itself slightly less well to the AG format. I note that the Kingston Branch of the OGS has a transcription of the 1842 census for Bathurst District (and other resources relating to that specific area). While this won't give you access to better copies of the original, transcribers with local knowledge (as is often the case with AG) provide a superior transcription than the for-profit services provide. https://kingston.ogs.on.ca/publications ... rice-list/ Good luck and thanks for your positive words about the hard work of the AG volunteers.
