Hello, The linking with the 1881 census is no more available for free through 'ancestry.ca'. I made some testing with 'familysearch.org' and found interesting results. The transcription of the 1881 census is at 50% level of progress on that site and their method of proofreading is similar to AG's one. Furthermore, the access is free of charge. Have a look on the following page, where I could post 6 links with the 1881 and 1871 censuses in the footnotes area: http://automatedgenealogy.com/census/View.jsp?id=82064 So, I would appreciate that AG could start using the 'familysearch.org' site as a source of direct linking with the 1881 census. Hi, You can already link to the 1881 Census records at Library and Archives Canada. Find the person on the LAC site and copy the link for the Item page, for example: http://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/census/188 ... id=4735911 and then paste it into the PANB or LAC Url box in the linking centre and click Submit. This works for the 1861, 1871, 1881, and 1891 censuses. We got burned by Family Search once, I would rather avoid linking to their site. Lindsay |

Hello Lindsay, Thanks for your comments. I understand your frustrations about the initial linking process for 1881 with a third party. Unfortunately, those efforts led to a dead end. I went through a series of tests to establish various links with LAC. May I point out that the AG actual linking process doesn't work right away since AG is expecting an URL with an argument 'Pages' rather than 'pages' as edited by LAC. So, I had to modify the URL sent by LAC to be able to achieve the linking process in AG. There is a bug to correct on the AG side. You might want to look on the following page for comparison purposes: http://automatedgenealogy.com/census/View.jsp?id=82064 The linking through LAC is a quite long process since there are only four arguments available for the search of a person. Besides, LAC doesn't support a proofreading method. So, the quality of their data is variable. Finally, the link through Familysearch displays only the family searched rather than the whole page of enumeration, which is much more convenient. However, Familysearch doesn't actually support requests for corrections, which is quite annoying. Thanks for evaluating the pros and cons of those suggestions. Michel Dubois, Quebec City. |

Hi Michel, I went to the LAC site and found the record for my great grandfather: http://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/census/188 ... id=4972482 which I was able to cut and paste into the linking centre without any issue. Ah, it appears that LAC will accept /pages/ or /Pages/ interchangeably. I wonder why you get pages in your results while I get Pages when I search. I changed the linking centre to accept either. I haven't used the Family Search search facility enough to know how much better it is than the LAC search function, but if you do find a record on FS it is pretty easy to find the corresponding record on LAC, especially if you use the advanced search options. For the time being I prefer linking to the LAC records, which I am more inclined to expect to be stable. Lindsay |
