Wondering how I can convert a district and ward on a Canadian census to an actual physical street address? Is there a weblink that does this?

Thanks.

Hi Gerry -

Good question. I am not an expert and hope others will chime in with additional information.

You don't specify which census most interests you and the answer varied by census.

1911 and 1921 are the easiest as addresses are listed in column 4 of each census page. This is an optional field for transcription for this project for 1911 and you may see it already transcribed (especially in urban areas) but if not, the address and other information (religion, employment, etc.) can be viewed by clicking on "Split view".

In the 1901 census addresses are listed on a Schedule 2 to each sub-district. There used to be a link from Automated Genealogy to Schedule 2 for each sub-district but these were broken a few years ago when Library & Archives Canada rearranged their on-line census access. I just tried, and failed, to find the Schedule 2s on a visit to the LAC site. Perhaps others know how to access these?

Thanks for your interest. Mark

Hello Gerry and Mark

From my vacation site on the Canaries, I'm still linked with AG ... fortunately.

The schedule 2 is still available for 1901.

There is a PDF for each province showing the districts and subs plus adresses.

For Quebec the PDF has 250 pages.

Reach through Google 'lac 1901 schedule 2'

Good luck.

Michel, Fuerte Ventura.

Hi Michel -

That's great! Thanks for pointing us in the right direction. I used it this morning while proofreading and it worked, sort of. I am proof reading 1901, Quebec, Montreal 177, A-29. Unfortunately the LAC index is off and I actually found A-29 under A-31. I hope this is an isolated error.

Here is a link to the LAC 1901 home page. The resource you mentioned is there under "Schedules":

Enjoy the warmth of the Canaries - central and eastern Canada have some icy conditions at present so I hope spring will be fully in place for your return.

Mark
