Hello,

I transcribed one of the last pages of the 1911 census. This is in Rimouski:

However, if you try a research on one of those transcribed names, AG doesn't find it. Why?

michel,

The search is using an index for each level of search (prov., district, and enumeration district).
Only the index that is updated as transcription/changes are made is the enumeration district index.
The other two indexes are updated approx. once per month by a special program initiated by the site administrator.

Cheers,

Hello Alain,

If I understand well, the scheme to manage the indexes in 1911 is not the same as in 1852.

So far, most of my transcriptions were done in 1852 and I have had no problem to request freshly updated data.

Michel.

Michel,

The functioning of the indexes that I described is for the 1901 and 1911 censuses.
as for the 1916 and 1851/52 censuses, I could not tell you because I never inquired about them to the site manager.
I assumed that they were the same.

You have now stimulated my curiosity about them and will enquire.

Cheers,

Michel,

In response to my inquiry, I learned that:
A) the indexes of the 1916 and 1951/52 censuses are updated as changes occur. This was possible without adverse effects because of the smaller size of these censuses.

B) the 1901 and 1911 censuses being quite large, there were adverse interactions between the searches and the database updates. To aleviate these issues, the searches at the national, provincial and district levels are done on a copy of these databases that are updated approx. monthly by a program initiated by the site administrator at time of low activity to minimise the impact on users.

Cheers,

Hello Alain,

Thx for the explanation. All that makes sense.

Michel.
