I'm searching for statistics for the population of Vancouver Island over time, for use in a revision of my book Vancouver Island Book of Everything. How well would your line counts translate into numbers of people? I get these totals:
Vancouver Island 26,400 lines
Victoria 24,219 lines
Kwawkewlth Agency 1,900+1,400 lines
West Coast Agency 1,950+1,950+300 lines
Total lines = 58,119
Thank you for a most valuable service. It's very difficult to derive population figures for a non-jurisdictional area.

One problem with our line counts is that they include blank lines. These are most prominent in the last page of each enumeration district where we inserted blank lines to complete the page and indicate that the page had been completely transcribed. For example, page 11, the last page of British Columbia / VANCOUVER ISLAND / Alberni A-1 has only two people transcribed and 48 blank lines. You would have to go through each enumeration district on Vancouver Island and check the last page for blank lines. Blank lines were also found for various reasons, for example, lines that were crossed out, or sometimes the enumerator left a blank line between families.
Hope this helps.

Another problem is people missed by the census takers and even in the 2010 US Census people were missed. In my own family that were living in New Brunswick CA in 1851 they were not enumerated although I have information that they were there before and after the Census.
