I have updated all the links to Soldiers of the First World War records to the most recent LAC site.

In the process I saved the names and regimental numbers in the database so that they can be relinked if the current id numbers are ever revamped. The names in the list of linked records are now the names in the LAC records rather than the names in the census.

There are over 10,000 records linked.

What is happening now to create new links? I can see the record on the LAC site, but when I copy the link into the AG linking site, it says the LAC site refused to send any data. Can we no longer link soldiers' enlistment papers to the census records?
Thanks, Judy

Hi Judy -

Thanks for letting us know. This must be quite a recent change on LAC's part.

The good news is that the existing links have NOT been lost (as happened with the British Home Children and Halifax Explosion links when the relevant archive decided to change how their databases were encoded). By right-clicking the "open in new window" instruction the linked Soldiers of the First World War records still come up in a separate tab or window.

What LAC seems to have changed is the ability for an outside website to embed the link. We have no idea why this might have been changed and there may not be an easy fix, but we will ponder options.

In the meantime you could save the WWI info as a line note.

Thanks for efforts through the years. Mark

Hello Judy and Mark,

Business as usual. So far, I linked many hundreds of WW1 soldiers with the 1901 and 1911 censuses. Each time, I posted a footnote to confirm the link, both in 1901 and 1911.

Today, I linked a new record as usual, changing the "https" to "http", which is the only way to succeed a link with LAC. Look at the record ùi posted today:

http://automatedgenealogy.com/census/View.jsp?id=35322

The only new trick is that you ought to click on "open in a new window" to view the soldier data.

Be very healthy.

McMichel.

Merci mille fois! This does seem to work, but it is a nuisance. First, remembering to change https to http when the link has been copied, then clicking on Open in new window to see the record. But I can now get back to my own COVID-19 project: to honour Canadian soldiers killed in WWI I decided to link their name from the Canadian Virtual War Memorial to their census records. In order to be sure I had the right soldier with so many name duplicates, I had to look at their attestation record. It then made sense to add that link as well. (Then, if their name appeared in both 1901 and 1911 census records along with their family and family linking had not been done, why not add that?) This has become my personal challenge, and I expect/hope it will take much longer than COVID, as so far I am almost finished with surnames beginning with BEN! I do wonder though if the lucky person who finds these links will realize that to see the WWI record, one must click on Open in new link. But at least there will be an indication that the record can be viewed.
Again, my thanks to you both.
Judy

If you go back and check out a previously linked soldier you will see some changes! With the information Michel provide, Lindsay was inspired to program a work-around. So now the link goes directly to the PDFed service file. The image can sometimes take a little longer to open but other than that I think you will both be pleased.

To establish new links, it need to be done by copying the web address from the same page as always, not from the PDF itself.

If you have any problems, questions or comments, don't hesitate to post them here.

That's a great project Judy and I'm happy to see it Lindsay's programming can see it continue.

Thanks again to you both and keep well. Mark

Hello Mark and Lindsay,

Indeed, you implemented a major improvement which clarifies the way to access to the soldier's data.

Thanks so much,

McMichel.

Yes, indeed, this is a great change. It does facilitate linking, and I hope anyone who finds the link will realize they can see the actual attestation paper by looking at page in a new window.
Thank you all, and Lindsay, you are amazing, getting this done so quickly.

HELP! Same problem as a year ago. Once again, when I try to link a WWI record, I get the message that LAC refuses to connect. I have tried changing https to http but nothing helps. I first noticed this almost a month ago, but thought it was something temporary with updates at LAC so left it, but this is still happening. Can anyone tell me how to link a WWI record now? And are all such links that have been made now inaccessible?
Thanks, Judy

Me again. I just tried to link a different soldier with no problem, so perhaps the system isn't broken again. The link I could not do was for James H. Calberry:
https://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/discover/ ... mber=81649
which I tried to link to James H. Calbery, line 8 on:
http://www.automatedgenealogy.com/censu ... 29+ONTARIO
Can you manage to make this link?
Thanks again, and sorry for the confusion.
Judy
